Hyderabad: The Minister for Major Irrigation, Mr P. Sudarshan Reddy, on Saturday made it clear that he would abide by the decision of the Congress elected representatives of the Telangana region to submit resignations en masse on July 4 for the cause of Telangana Statehood.

Speaking to the media here, Mr Sudarshan Reddy said that the Congress elected representatives of the region have stuck to their decision to resign from their posts en masse to mount pressure on the party high command on the formation of separate Telangana State.

Replying to a question, Mr Reddy clarified that there was no pressure from the Congress high command on the Telangana Congress elected representatives to retrace their step. When pointed out to his notice that some Telangana Congress leaders were differing with the collective decision, he said that it was their personal opinion and he would resign from his post on July 4 along with his party colleagues. “Let us wait and see what decision the Centre would take by July 4”, he added.

Stating that the Chief Minister has reviewed the progress of irrigation projects on Saturday, the Minister said that 1.18 lakh families were displaced due to the irrigation projects taken up under Jalayagnam. Under Relief and Rehabilitation package, the Irrigation department extended Rs 53,000 to each displaced family for construction of their houses. Keeping the rising construction costs in mind, it was decided to extend another Rs 45,000 to them through the Housing department, he added. For the SCs and STs, additional Rs 20,000 would be extended under R and R, he added. Out of the total amount required for the R and P package of Rs 1,350 crores, the Irrigation department would bear Rs 650 crores, he added.

Stating that the process of filling of vacant posts in Irrigation department to be speeded up, Mr Reddy reminded that 13 Chief Engineers were promoted as Engineers-In-Chief while 69 Executive Engineers were elevated as Superintending Engineers. He also said that some 240 vacant Executive Engineer posts would be filled within 10 days, he added.
