Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Thursday said that its officials have seized about 145 kg of plastic carry bags of below 40 microns from Big Bazaar, Tarnaka, during a visit by Hyderabad Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy who inspected several commercial establishments in Tarnaka and Habsiguda in connection with ban on plastic carry bags.
The Mayor, along with senior officials of GHMC inspected 24 big, medium and small establishments in the areas.
The Mayor was left shocked over Big Bazar, Tarnaka’s attitude towards ban on carry bags below 40 microns when she found that the commercial establishment was using bags of 35 microns, whereas all other smaller establishments were found using carry bags of above 40 microns or bags of other material.
Ms Karthika Reddy expressed her displeasure over use of below 40 microns by corporate business establishments and on the other hand she felt happy with local establishments who are using recommended 40 microns and their concerned with the environment.
Further said, as per the directions of the Supreme Court the non-oven bags are also not to be used.
The Mayor appealed to the traders to display price list of carry bags at the cash counters as per the act and asked to give incentives to the customers who bring their own carry bags. She also informed GHMC will be laying penalties on the defaulters from July 16 onwards.
Earlier, the Mayor inspected several establishments in Tarnaka and later in Hubsiguda inspected Venkatramireddy Sweets, Baker’s World, Sri Sai Stationers, Bhagya Lakshmi Enterprises, Suguna Chicken, Sanman Hotel, Suman Medial and General stores, Tarnaka Provision stores, NR Sweets, Garden Tea and Coffee Depot, Duke Style and Style, AR Fruit and Juice centre, Big Bazar in Tarnaka and Gayatri Tiffin centre, Mahavir collection, Tirumala Medical and General stores, Spencer, Shine Women’s Wear, Sri Sai Curry Point and Caterers, Habsiguda House, Swathi Tiffins, SV My Style and Suprabath Hotel in Habsiguda.(INN)
