Defence authorities are yet to give permission for conducting soil tests for the proposed metro rail project in the Secunderabad Cantonment limits. As a result, Hyderabad Metro Rail officials are doing rounds of Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) office for the necessary permission.
The Hyderabad Metro Rail has already completed first round of soil tests and also prepared designs on corridor-1 between Miyapur-L B Nagar (28.87 kms). However, on corridor-II between JBS-Falaknuma (14.78 kms), soil testing works are yet to start with defence authorities yet to grant right of way and traders in Sultan Bazar and Koti area demanding realingnment of the corridor.
The Metro Rail needs around 9,000 square metres on the central median between Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) and YMCA for corridor-II. The SCB had passed a resolution six months ago on the right of way proposal. The SCB also sent a letter to the Metro Rail authorities to enter into a lease agreement for allotting their land to the rail project. According to the lease agreement, the metro rail authorities have to pay Rs 1.5 crore per annum to the SCB.
“A copy of the Board resolution on allotting land and draft lease agreement was sent to the Southern Command, Defence Estates, Pune, for final approval six months ago,” a senior SCB official told TOI.
The metro rail officials are doing rounds of the SCB office and enquiring about status of the allotment. “We will not allow Metro Rail authorities to take up soil testing in our jurisdiction till we get the green signal from the Southern Command,” the official added.
When contacted, HMRL managing director NVS Reddy said, “We have no other option, but to wait till the defence authorities gave the green signal. However, corridor-II works are likely to get delayed by at least six months as Sultan Bazar and Koti shop-keepers are objecting over metro rail alingnment. The issue will be sorted out soon.”
Meanwhile, the Defence Estates, AP Circle, has sent a proposal to the ministry of defence (MoD) seeking permission to allot 1.25 acre defence land to the Hyderabad Metro Rail. TOI
