Hyderabad: The TDP chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, has urged the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to take immediate action for procurement of rice by the Food Corporation of India during the ensuing Rabi season and also permit the farmers to export their produce.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Naidu complained that the State government was not showing any interest in coming to the rescue of the farmers who were in distress due to a series of calamities and the FCI was also adopting a negligent attitude towards procurement.
Pointing out that the Rabi production was expected to be around 100 lakh tones, he said that the storage capacity of FCI was however only 35lakh tones and as such there was need to permit exports to save farmers from resorting to distress sale.
Mr Naidu said that even the Railways have not allotted enough rakes to the State for faster movement of rice. He has urged the Prime Minister to take the levy needs, State’s requirements and permit the export of the rest of the produce so that farmers would not be put to inconvenience. He has also urged him to direct the FCI to procure rice at the MSP. (NSS)
