Hyderabad: Peter Burleigh who succeeded Timothy Roemer at the end of June as the United States Ambassador to India, called on Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at his chambers in the state Secretariat on Tuesday.

Burleigh is expected to stay in Hyderabad for two days and go round the historic city. His meeting with the Chief Minister was described as a ‘courtesy call’ by the CMO.

The warning for the unsuspecting is that Burleigh speaks fluent Hindi, Bengali, Nepali and Sinhalese. In the United Nations, he was popular because of his ability to laugh at himself.

Very few US Ambassadors came to India with UN experience.

Thomas Pickering, Ambassador in 1992-93 came to India after representing the United States in the UN. There are none at all who have represented the US in India after the extensive South Asia experience Burleigh has had: Sri Lanka, Maldives and Nepal.

Burleigh was earlier posted in New Delhi from April to July 2009 as Charge d’ Affairs in the US Embassy New Delhi.(INN)
