Following the intervention of PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana and AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, medical and health minister D.L. Ravindra Reddy backtracked from announcing his resignation from the Cabinet, but not before unleashing a veiled attack on Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.
Dr Ravindra Reddy, who reached Hyderabad early on Wednesday, said, “I want someone to explain to me how was it that I was allotted the combined medical and health portfolio on Mr Azad’s advice, and the portfolio needed to be split now.” The minister added, “I am not a person to carry suitcase loaded with money to Delhi via Chennai and Mumbai. I was never a liar, I have been a sincere worker in the Congress, I will continue to serve the party. The post of a minister is worth about a penny for me. But for the advice of senior le-aders, I would have taken an extreme step today”
Earlier, Dr Ravindra Reddy was closeted with Mr Satyanarayana for about three hours and it was during this meeting that he spoke to Mr Azad on the phone. He said that he had no complaints that his portfolio has been split as this is the prerogative of the Chief Minister. Dr Ravindra Reddy quickly added, “The way it was done was like an unexpected stab.”
The minister said, “Someone might have not liked my handling such a portfolio and my independent style of functioning, but I cannot help it. I was never a stooge, I will never be a stooge to somebody, I only know how to work hard and honestly. I would quit politics rather than indulge in graft.” Dr Ravindra Reddy further said that he has information that a “big” leader has readied a list of MLAs to be appointed as chairmen of corporations.
