Power men stage Dharna at Khairatabad Circle

Hyderabad: Employees of the Electricity department, under the aegis of United Electricity Employees’ union, on Thursday held a dharna at Vidhyuth Soudha to press for solution to their demands. As a result, the vehicular traffic came to standstill for some time near Khairatabad area due to the dharna.

The employees in batches gathered at the Vidhyuth Soudha and staged a dharna. When the police arrested one batch, another batch rushed to the place and continued their demonstration. With this, tension prevailed at Vidhyuth Soudha. Finally, the police arrested all the agitators and whisked them away from the place.

Speaking on the occasion, the union president, Mr D Suresh Babu, said that there were 30,000 vacant posts in the Electricity department. The government was exploiting the contract employees of the department by paying a mere Rs 3,000 per month. He demanded that the government take immediate steps to fill all the vacant posts in Transco, genco and four Discoms. He also demanded that the salaries of electricity employees should be revised as per the MoU signed on December 21, at JCL. He also urged that counseling should be held for transfers of electricity employees on par with employees of other departments. Rs 5-lakh compensation and a job to a family member would be extended in case of death of electricity employee on duty, he demanded.

The union vice-president, Mr K Eshwar Rao, the general secretary, Mr N Kiran and others also participated in the dharna. (NSS)
