Hyderabad: More than six months after announcing his party’s merger with the Congress, actor-turned-politician K.Chiranjeevi will be officially joining the Congress on August 20.
It was on February 6 this year that Chiranjeevi announced that his party Praja Rajyam Party would be merged with the ruling Congress party. However, following procedural delays pertaining to Election Commission of India and political developments in the state, the official merger got delayed. Finally, it will be on August 20 when Chiranjeevi will be officially joining the Congress party.
Speaking to media persons on Saturday, Chiranjeevi said that he would formally take the membership of the Congress in New Delhi on August 20, on the occasion of birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will give him the membership. Further, the formality of PRP’s merger with the Congress would be completed on Aug 22, the 56th birthday of Chiranjeevi. A grand function would also be held at Gandhi Bhavan, Congress’ headquarters in Hyderabad, where all senior leaders and legislators of PRP would take Congress membership.
It was on August 22, 2008, when Chiranjeevi announced his entry into politics. Four days later, he launched the PRP, on the slogan of social justice, at Tirupati. However, the superstar of Tollywood who acted in 149 films failed to make an impact in politics and was able to win just 18 seats in the 2009 general elections. Despite emerging as the third largest party after TDP, the PRP could secure just 16.12 per cent votes.
Chiranjeevi was considered a non-entity in state politics till the former chief minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy was alive. However, YSR’s death led to a vacuum in Congress leadership in the state which facilitated the entry of Chiranjeevi into the party. (INN)
