When godman Sathya Sai Baba was alive, Satyajit was the apple of his eyes. But, things have changed miraculously in the past few days for him. Now, he cannot move without security.

An MBA graduate, he was Sai Baba’s main caretaker for several years. A native of Tamil Nadu, he studied in the institutions run by Baba at Puttaparthi, from LKG to MBA. He became close to Baba and began living with him about 10 years ago.

The bond strengthened after Sai Baba slipped in a bathroom and fractured his hip on June 4, 2003. As Sai Baba was crippled, he attended to him round the clock. A bachelor, he lived with the godman at Yajur Mandir, in Prashanti Nilayam, and accompanied him wherever he went. Over a period of time, he became a very powerful man in the ashram.

But things changed drastically. After Sai Baba was hospitalised on March 28, he began facing a lot of allegations — one being that he did not feed Sai Baba proper food and gave him lot of sedative drugs, resulting in the deterioration of his health.

Once these allegations were in public space, many devotees and ashramites turned against him. He has received threat calls too. Police have asked him to keep a low profile and not move out of Puttaparthi without informing them.

The case of Dr Aiyer, Sai Baba’s personal doctor, is no different. He is facing allegations of not maintaining Sai Baba’s medical records properly. He has also been given protection.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, all members of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Central Trust, which runs the Sai Baba’s educational, health and social service empire, valued at Rs 40,000 crore, have been provided with security.

Sai Kulwant… This name has raised a lot of curiosity, after it was decided to bury Sai Baba in the Sai Kulwant Hall in the Prashanti Nilayam premises.

Sai Kulwant, alias Kulwant Rai, is an industrialist from New Delhi. A resident of Aurangzeb Lane, he was formerly state president of the Sri Sathya Sai Organization of New Delhi. An ardent devotee of Sai Baba, in 1993-94, he built a magnificent hall in the Prashanti Nilayam premises, where Sai Baba gave discourses and blessed devotees.

After the hall was completed, Sai Baba named the hall Sai Kulwant Hall. Sai Baba has stayed at Kulwant’s house when in New Delhi.

On April 9, 2010, when Sai Baba visited Delhi after 11 years, he made it a point to visit Kulwant’s house with his entourage, bless the family and have dinner. Now, Kulwant is said to be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. TOI
