Hyderabad: In an effort to provide better riding comfort and safety to the train passengers, Indian Railways has acquired two State of the Art Rail Grinding Machines (RGM) .
These Rail Grinding machines help in grinding the Rails periodically to enhance the safety and comfort of the Rail Passengers. These protype machines has been acquired by the Indian Railways and one Machine is at Allahabad while the second one is in South Central Railway.
One such Rail Grinding Machine was inaugurated today at Secunderbad Railway station by Mr A.P. Misra, Member Engineering, Railway Board, in the presence of Mr R. Vijay Mohan,, Additional General Manager, S.C. Railway and other senior officials of the Railway.
The Steel on the surface of the Rails forms cracks due to constant friction with the Wagon /Coach wheels and hence grinding becomes necessary . Also due to constant wear and tear, the Rail becomes worn out, damaged or deformed over a period of time. The longevity depends on the amount of axle load the Rail bears, number of trains , quality of rail bed etc. The Grinding of Rail helps in extending the life of the Rails and delays the need for replacement . To maintain conformity with wheels , Rail should be ground to low stress profiles. It also helps in good steering of the Train as well as extends rail life while minimizing risk. Most of the work is done with the help of these machines without causing much delay. (NSS)
