Hyderabad: The TDP has demanded that compensation be immediately paid to farmers who had declared crop holiday voluntarily as there were no buyers for even their rabi crop.

In a statement here on Saturday, party senior leader Mr. Kimidi Kala Venkata Rao has alleged that both the central and state governments have remained mute spectators despite farmers of the Godavari district declaring crop holiday and some farmers even resorting to suicides, as there were no buyers for their crops. He said the PCC Chief Mr. Botsa Satyanarayana’s statement that the crop holiday was a political stunt was nothing but a face saving act. The government has totally failed in making the farmers reverse their decision of declaring a crop holiday as it could not instill confidence in them by loan rescheduling, purchase of their crop and supply of the inputs. Stating that the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Chief Minister Mr. N. Kirankumar Reddy had never cultivated, he said as such they did not know the problems of the farmers. He has demanded that Mr. Botsa should immediately withdraw his remark that there was politics behind the crop holiday. He has faulted the government for not being able to have the godowns in the state which were dumped with Pubjab wheat vacated. He has lamented that the government which had been showing interest on the industrialists had not shown the same interest on the farmers. Demanding compensation to farmers on crop holiday, he has also asked the government to have the loans rescheduled and the interest on loans waived. He said it was the duty of the government to end the suicides of the farmers by coming to their rescue.
