Despite mounting pressure from the Congress high command, nine MPs from Telangana region have stated that they would not withdraw their resignations until a concrete assurance by the Centre on the formation of Telangana state.
Speaking to media after a meeting of T Congress MPs at Nizamabad MP Madhu Yashki Goud’s house on Sunday, party MP Manda Jagannadham said they decided to stand by their resignations. “We are firm. There will be no change in our stand, despite calls from senior leaders asking us to withdraw resignations and attend the monsoon session of the Parliament. However, we will meet Azad in Delhi before attending the monsoon session. We will take a final call on our action plan only after meeting him,” he said.
Earlier in the day, AP Congress affairs in-charge Gulab Nabi Azad called up Rajya Sabha MP K Keshava Rao asking him to convince MPs to withdraw their resignations, as it would embarrass the Congress high command during the monsoon session.
“We told him about public mood in support of Telangana. We will withdraw only if a satisfactory assurance is made on Telangana. We will be happy if Azad completes the consultation process within two months. We will support any programme taken up for the cause of Telangana, including the proposed general strike by government employees from Telangana,” he told reporters.
He called upon elected representatives from all political parties to come on to a single platform and realize the dream of Telangana state. “I request all political parties to set aside differences and not to indulge in political one-upmanship,” Rao said. TOI
