The Congress steering committee for Telangana has asked ministers and MLAs from Telangana region to hoist the national flag on August 15 and later follow it up by unfurling the Telangana flag. Steering committee convenor G Sukhendar Reddy said though all members were unanimous about hoisting the national flag on Monday, they also wanted the Telangana flag to be hoisted in sync with the mood of the people.
Speaking to media after the conclusion of the steering committee meeting at Congress leader K Keshava Rao’s house, Reddy said ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs would continue to mount pressure on the Centre by staying away from all official functions and duties.
“Our MPs have already submitted their resignations to the LS speaker and we stand by our actions. We are trying to convey to our high command, the mood of the public in the region through these actions. We are not trying to bring down the government. We will stay away from the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament and except for urgent situations. We are expecting a positive reply from the high command before September 17,” he said.
Responding to queries on ministers attending cabinet meeting on Tuesday, he said those present at the meeting have decided to stay away from work as promised. Ministers Basavaraju Saraiah, K Jana Reddy, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, J Geeta Reddy and Ponnala Lakshmaiah have already announced their intention of staying away from Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.
He said Congress leaders would begin the Independence Day celebrations by offering their respects at the Martyr’s Memorial near Gun Park and later move to their respective places to hoist the national flag.
Meanwhile, Congress legislator Marri Shashidhar Reddy took a dig at Telangana ministers for abstaining from duty. “Ministers who are citing the Telangana issue and refraining from discharging their duties are doing a disservice to the needy sections of the society,” he said.
The TJAC has asked ministers to refrain from participating in any official programmes on August 15. TJAC chairman M
Kodandaram asked them to participate in the celebrations along with the public and hoist the Tricolour. “Later, they must hoist the Telangana flag at all district headquarters, mandals and villages. This flag must be a hoisted at a height little less than our national flag,” he said. TOI
