Tension prevailed on Osmania University campus on Tuesday when pro-Telangana activists pelted stones as police stopped them from taking out rally protesting the A.P. State Formation Day celebrations.
Police lobbed teargas shells to disperse agitating students of Telangana Rashtra Students Vibhag who assembled at Arts College and headed towards Gun Park before the State Assembly in a procession.
They made vain bids repeatedly to surge ahead from the NCC gate.
The slogan-shouting students, however, were stopped before Andhra Mahila Sabha College and the university gate was closed preventing the rally from moving further. Heated arguments ensued between the police and the students.
The police resorted to mild lathicharge chasing away the protestors who rushed towards the engineering college and began showering stones on police.
The police reacted by firing tear gas shells.
Meanwhile, activists of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) assembled at Arts College and took a pledge to strive for the formation of Telangana.
Some members of OU Students Joint Action committee too took out a rally waving black flags and got their heads tonsured protesting the formation day celebrations. Hindu
