Hyderabad: The State president of Indian Dalitha Christian Rights, Andhra Pradesh, Mr Perike Varaprasada Rao, has demanded that the State government ensure prosecution of the Transport Minister, Mr Botcha Satyanarayana, for misleading the people by making a statement that the SC girl B.Tech student Gunde Varalakshmi of Laskarguda of Hayatnagar died in gas leak accident and had not committed suicide.
In a memorandum submitted to the Home Minister, Ms P. Sabitha Indra Reddy, Mr Varaprasada Rao demanded that the State government pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs, five acres of land and a government job to the kin of the deceased girl student.
Stating that Gunde Varalakshmi of Laskarguda, an SC Madiga, was studying B.Tech first year in the Vignan Engineering College at Deshmukh village, he stated that the college management had demanded her to pay Library Fee and bus fee of Rs 18,000 immediately as the State government reimburses only tuition fee to the below poverty line students.
Mr Varaprasada Rao has alleged that after seven months, the college management summoned her on Saturday and asked her to pay Rs 31,000 as the government did not sanction her scholarship. The management also insulted the girl in front of her classmates taking her caste name and asked her either to pay the fee by Monday or stop attending the college, he added. Unable to overcome the humiliation, the heart broken girl doused herself with kerosene and committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on the next morning (Sunday), he added.
The Dalitha Christian leader stated that while the poor girl committed suicide by setting herself ablaze due to humiliation, the Transport Minister, Mr Botcha Satyanarayana, issued a statement misleading the people stating that the girl had died due to accidental fire. He said that when this was brought to the notice of the Home Minister, she called on the girl’s parents and declared that the preliminary inquiry into the incident by the Cyberabad police had established that Varalakshmi had committed suicide.
Stating that the Transport Minister’s statement on the girl’s death caused mental and physical pain, the Dalit leader demanded that the government order registration of criminal case against Mr Botcha Satyanarayana under SC, ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act. (NSS)
