Hyderabad: Demanding that the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre introduce a Bill in the ongoing Budget session of Parliament to carve out separate Telangana State, the “Telangana Federation of University Teachers Association” staged a dharna in front of the OU College of Engineering Auditorium on Saturday.
Professors from all the universities in the Telangana region, i.e. the Osmania University, the Kakatiya University, the Palamuru University, the Mahatma Gandhi University, the Telangana University and the Satavahana University participated in the dharna which began at 10 am and continued till 5 pm.
The Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, the Telugu Desam party leader, Mr Hareeshwar Reddy, and the TRS leader, Mr Nayani Narasimha Reddy, called on the agitating professors on the University campus.
Mr Dattatreya said that the non-cooperation movement launched by the government employees of the Telangana region would continue. He said that the BJP was ready to support formation of Telangana State if a Bill was introduced in Parliament, but the problem was with the Congress party which was going back on its word in connection with the Telangana issue.
Mr Nayani Narasimha Reddy appreciated the professors of various universities in the region, stating that they were instrumental in spreading awareness among the students for the inevitable need for a separate Telangana State.
The TDP leader and former deputy speaker, Mr Hareeshwar Reddy, said that barring politicians, all sections of people in the region remained united on the Telangana issue. He said that they would try their best to evolve a consensus among the politicians in this regard. (NSS)
