Hyderabad: The Rajya Sabha member and senior Congress leader, Mr V Hanumantha Rao, has appreciated the Union Cabinet for approving the enumeration of castes as well as the below poverty line census and described it as a historic and significant step in the right direction.

In a pressnote issued here on Friday, Mr Rao stated that the demand to have a caste-wise data which was pending since 1951 has been approved by the UPA government and it deserves great appreciation by the people. The UPA government, by approving conduct of caste-wise census, has taken a bold decision which will be a great boost to the OBC people who have been deprived of their due share in every field of this country. This exercise will certainly give a clear picture about the population of OBCs both in cities and rural areas and their socio-economic conditions.

He stated that the caste-wise data will put at rest the repeated queries and questions by the Courts on reservation policy matters relating to OBCs and will certainly help the Centre and State governments to implement the welfare measures for the betterment of the OBC people and other deprived sections.

Mr Hanumantha Rao congratulated and expressed his thanks to the UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, for her initiative and the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, for taking a concrete decision on this important issue. The decision to collect data about BPL in City and Rural areas is also a welcome decision as it will help the Planning Commission to decide on allocation of funds for those sections both in city and rural areas. He stated that “as a convener of Parliamentary Forum of OBC MPs, I thank all the members of Parliament for their consistent support in raising this matter in Parliament and in participating in the delegation to represent the matter with the Prime Minister”.
