Youth sets self afire over Telangana delay

Close on the heels of suicide of an engineering student, a BBM student attempted suicide for the cause of separate Telangana state by setting himself on fire. He suffered 80 per cent burns.

Y Avinash, 25, poured kerosene over himself and set himself afire at Kaman Chowrasta in Karimnagar town in the early hours of Friday. He was rushed to MGM Hospital where doctors said he had slim chances of survival.

Sources said that Avinash had been depressed over the delay in formation of T state and was particularly upset with minister and Rayalaseema leader T G Venkatesh’s recent remarks. Speaking to reporters from his hospital bed, he demanded that a criminal case be booked against the Seemandhra leaders for making provocative statements against T state. “The Centre is not responding despite mass resignations of legislators. The humiliation on Telangana by the Seemandhra leaders is unacceptable. I have decided to end my life in protest against the Centre’s delay in formation of Telangana state and the Seemandhra leaders’ tactics,” he said. TOI
