Tirunelveli (TN), Feb 8 :Sixteen people, including six police constables, were injured in a clash between two communities during a temple festival at Sankarankoil near here, police said.

Police used teargas shells and lathicharge to quell the clash, which took place last evening after a place of worship of one religious community was found to have been allegedly desecrated by a group from another, they said.

The Sankarankoil assembly constituency is set to hold a by-election in what will be the ruling AIADMK’s second bypoll since it came to power. The by-election was necessitated by the death of the Sankarankoil’s representative and AIADMK minister C Karuppasamy in October last.

Angered members of the community whose place of worship was desecrated pelted stones and bottles at the other group who were coming in a procession, police said.

The two groups went on a rampage, setting fire to shops and thatched sheds in the area, they said.

The situation in the town was now under control, police said, adding armed police had been posted at important points and ten persons had been detained for questioning in connection with the incident.andhrajyoti
