Army convoy attacked ahead of PM’s visit to Srinagar

armyIn yet another broad daylight offensive, on the eve of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit, militants have attacked a convoy of Army at Hyderpora, on the National Highway Bypass, in Srinagar on Monday.

Authoritative sources told The Hindu that a group of heavily armed militants launched a “fidayeen-type attack” on an army cavalcade near Classic Hospital and Jamkash Vehicleades at 4.30 p.m. The highway has been closed for traffic and a vast area on either side of the road has been cordoned off. Sources said that exchange of gunfire caused panic among hundreds of staff and customers in about a dozen of the automobile showrooms, service centres and other business establishments.

Senior Police and Army officials have rushed to the spot. Sources said that reinforcements were being rushed from different units of Police and security forces.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi are visiting the State on June 25 and 26 to interact with the earthquake affected people in Kishtwar, inauguration of a train service from Qazigund to Banihal and a host of meeting with Police, security forces and politicians.
