Four senior Congress leaders in Assam has also joined the chorus with Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh and appealed to the central party leaders to hand over leadership of Congress Parliamentary Party to Rahul Gandhi.
In a statement signed by PCC general secretary Anil Raja, vice-president Jaman Singh Brahma and former MPs Kirip Cheliha and Bolin Kuli, the party leaders observed, “In order to meet the challenges, we are of firm opinion that Rahul Gandhi should now be elected as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party so that he can lead the nation as the new Prime Minister.”
In their joint statement the Assam Congress leaders, who are also contemplating to start a signature campaign in favour of Rahul Gandhi, hoped that Mr Gandhi will consider their request, which is also the sentiment of lakhs of Congressmen all over the country.
The appeal of the Congress leaders has come close on the heels of Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh’s remark that Mr Gandhi had all the qualities and capabilities required to become a good Prime Minister. Asian Age
