Guwahati, March 23 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari Wednesday kicked off the party’s election campaign in Assam by launching a blistering attack on the ruling Congress while claiming that a saffron wave was sweeping the state.
“The Congress rule in Assam has been marked by corruption and nothing else and if anybody has become rich in the state then I am sure it is the ruling party leaders and ministers,” the BJP president said at an election rally at Kalain in Assam’s Barak Valley.
Gadkari addressed two election meetings in the Bengali-dominated Barak Valley region.
“People of Assam are looking for a change and that change could only be provided by the BJP and I am confident we shall be able to form the next government in the state,” the BJP president said.
The two-phase elections for the 126-member Assam legislature are being held April 4 and April 11.
The BJP is contesting all the 126 assembly seats.
In yet another election meeting in the eastern Tinsukia district, BJP’s star campaigner Hema Malini sought votes for the local party candidate by promising good governance and development.
“I am your Hema Malini and today I seek your help in voting the BJP to power. We shall assure the people of Assam good governance and corruption free rule,” the veteran actor said.
Local leaders were enthused by the high profile campaigning by the two star BJP campaigners.
“We are sure people of Assam have realised how seriously the BJP leadership is taking the Assam elections and hence leaders like Nitin Gadkari and Hema Malini have already started campaigning,” said BJP’s Tinsukia candidate Sanjay Kisen.
Other leaders like Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj are also expected to campaign in the state.
