Raipur, March 9 (IANS) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh Wednesday said his government was against Andhra Pradesh’s Rs.17,000 crore Polavaram irrigation project which threatens to submerge dozens of villages in his state’s Dantewada district.
“This project is not acceptable to Chhattisgarh, it will be opposed at all levels. We will even approach the Supreme Court,” Raman Singh said in the state assembly.
“The state government is well aware about the feelings of the people of the state about this project. The project is not acceptable to Chhattisgarh and we have already communicated it to the central government,” he said.
State government officials say the project will submerge dozens of villages in Dantewada and Chhattisgarh would have to build embankments along a 29 km stretch on the Sabari river.
Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh too recently objected to Andhra Pradesh going ahead with the construction without addressing the concerns expressed by Chhattisgarh and Orissa.
