Chennai, March 29 (IANS) The ruling DMK’s MP from Ramanathapuram J.K. Ritheesh was Tuesday lodged in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai prison after his arrest for alleged criminal intimidation and atrocities against Dalits in his constituency a day earlier.
He was arrested after a clash between DMK cadres and supporters of DMDK-AIADMK combine Monday in Ramanathapuram district, some 390 km from here, a police official said.
According to police, the DMK men were trying to repair a village road which was in a bad shape.
The DMDK-AIADMK men objected to the repair work, alleging that it violated the election code of conduct. This sparked the clash.
After police pacified the warring parties, Ritheesh with his supporters came in several vehicles and attacked some villagers.
The villagers blocked roads demanding the arrest of Ritheesh. Police later arrested 10 people, including the MP.
