New Delhi, March 4 (IANS) A 61-year-old former defence ministry official hanged himself at his Delhi home, police said Friday. His family said he was suffering from depression.

“S.C. Sarkar, who retired in August last year as under secretary in the defence ministry, was found dead by his wife and brother-in-law at his residence in Lodhi Colony area in south Delhi Thursday afternoon,” a senior police officer said.

“Sarkar’s wife told us that she had gone out to meet a contractor in Mayur Vihar for getting their flat repaired. When she tried to contact her husband over phone to enquire about lunch, he did not respond,” the officer added.

She told police she asked her domestic help to check but there was no response. Then she asked her brother-in-law to come. “Meanwhile, she too returned. They broke the door and found him hanging,” the officer said.

Sarkar’s family members told police that he was depressed.
