Geelani’s shutdown call evokes lukewarm response

Srinagar, March 12 (IANS) A shutdown called by hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani in the Kashmir Valley evoked a lukewarm response in Srinagar Saturday as most of the government offices and educational institutions remained open.

Shops in many uptown areas in this summer capital city were open and private transport moved normally. According to authorities, banks, government offices, educational institutions, post offices and other government and semi-government institutions were functioning normally here.

However, shops in the Residency Road area and other parts of Srinagar city remained closed and public transport plied marginally.

Geelani called for Saturday’s strike to protest what he called “continuing arrests of the local youth by the police”.

No untoward incident has so far been reported from anywhere in the valley.
