Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday, sparking off speculation in political circles about a closer relationship between the RJD and the Congress in the near future.
This is especially so as within the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the Congress’ ties with the 18-MP strong Dravida Munnetra Kazagham are currently under strain. Worse, the Congress’ 12 MPs from Telangana are under pressure from their constituents to quit.
Cabinet rejig soon
With a Cabinet reshuffle on the cards, there is also a talk that the RJD, which currently supports the Congress from outside, could join the UPA — though there is strong pressure from the Congress unit in Bihar against such an arrangement, as it could lead to the two parties contesting elections in the State together.
However, there are those in the Congress who feel that with the party making a dismal showing in the last Assembly elections, winning just a handful of seats, it might be better to have an electoral tie-up in the next elections. Hindu
