Social activist Anna Hazare’s supporters on Sunday burnt copies of the government’s Lokpal Bill at Jantar Mantar here. They said the Gandhian was determined to go on fast from August 16 to press for consideration of the civil society’s version of the Bill.
“The government’s Lokpal Bill is dangerous as it virtually covers nobody. Besides 1.25-crore government ‘babus’, the Prime Minister, Ministers, MPs, MLAs and even Chief Ministers do not fall under the ambit of the Lokpal Bill. It is a farce. Mr. Hazare will certainly go on fast,” said social activist Arvind Kejriwal.
He said denial of permission by the Delhi police would not deter the activists and Anna from going ahead with their fast and protest against the official version of the Bill, which was an “insult to Parliament.”
“[Union Minister] Kapil Sibal says burning copies of the Bill is an insult to Parliament. The Delhi Police say burning papers [Bill] is violation of the Environment Protection Act. We say bringing such a sham Bill in Parliament is itself an insult, not the burning,” Mr. Kejriwal said.
Mr. Hazare had been denied permission to hold the protest at Jantar Mantar on the ground that prohibitory orders were in force.
Mr. Kejriwal said the BJP-run Municipal Corporation of Delhi had granted permission to hold the protest on the Ramlila Ground here, but the sanction from the police was still awaited.
Besides Mr. Kejriwal, other activists took part in the protest at Jantar Mantar and burnt copies of the Bill. Hindu
