Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has issued stern directives for maintaining tight vigil in the sensitive districts of the State and keeping a close watch on mischief-makers and anti-social elements. These directives were issued after a law and order review meeting conducted by the Cabinet Secretary and the Chief Secretary here on Wednesday.
Ms. Mayawati’s fresh directives have come in the wake of some phone calls, reportedly from Iran, received by some meat-sellers in the communally sensitive city of Meerut on Sunday. According to the police, the unidentified caller reportedly asked the meat vendors to trigger bomb blasts for a price of Rs.2 crore. This was followed by the recovery of a handbill pasted on the shutter of a shop in Bareilly, which claimed that the Mumbai bomb blasts were masterminded by “IM (Indian Mujahideen)”
In both the cases, the recipients of the phone calls and the handbill informed the police. Even as the Special Director General (Law and Order ), Brij Lal, said that though investigations revealed that these were non-serious issues and probably the work of pranksters, the security agencies had been alerted.
Ms. Mayawati said vigil in the sensitive districts should be at its maximum during the “sawan mela” (which had begun across the State) and the forthcoming Ramzan. According to an official spokesman, Ms. Mayawati directed the police to identify anti-social elements and those involved in separatist activities and take action against them. Hindu
