Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Anup Mishra has landed in the soup for making a remark on the law and order situation in the State during his visit to New Delhi on Monday. Though Chief Minister Mayawati seemed to have given Mr. Mishra a clean chit after having “heard the official out,” her decision to get the facts verified by “sources” has created an uncertainty around the Chief Secretary’s fate.

Mr. Mishra, who assumed office on April 1, has denied having made the comment.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Ms. Mayawati said she was confident that the Chief Secretary would not make irresponsible statements. She said Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told her that the remark attributed to the Chief Secretary was blown out of context and that it was a wrong report. She would talk to the Chief Secretary on the subject. Irresponsible statements made by officials would not be tolerated, she said. Hindu
