The Mumbai Crime Branch on Thursday arrested two persons of the Ravi Pujari gang during their attempt to attack a very prominent film personality in Mumbai for extortion. The police also seized two sophisticated foreign-made 9 mm pistols, nine rounds of live cartridges and three mobile phones.
“It is an important prevention,” Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police Himanshu Roy said at a press conference here. He refused to name the famous film personality, but said it was a very big name.
He said the Crime Branch’s anti-extortion cell laid a trap on Wednesday night and arrested two members of the Ravi Pujari gang at around 9 p.m. when they reached the film personality’s house in the western suburb.
“We have also recovered a letter from the accused. The letter had many bad words in it. It threatened the person with dire consequences if he did not call the number given there,” Mr. Roy said.
He said that interrogation revealed that both the accused were asked to fire rounds to scare the person and then throw the letter at him.
Ravi Pujari has targeted many film personalities in the past for extortion.
The police said the film personality had not lodged any complaint with the police. The names of the arrested persons are Kalam Najeem Khan (32) and Sayyed Shahid Hussain (25), both residents of Kurla. They have been booked under Sections 387, 115 read with Sections 302, 120 (B), 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Hindu
