The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday said that due to a conflict of interest, International Cricket Council chief and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar should not have participated in the cabinet meeting which approved tax exemption for the 2011 World Cup.
“Pawar should have not have sat in the meeting. He should have kept away,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
Prasad also asked the government to explain the reasons for giving the exemption.
The government Thursday approved a request from ICC seeking tax exemption for the World Cup.
Official sources said the proposal evoked criticism from Sports Minister Ajay Maken who was also supported by his senior colleagues including Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni and Culture MinisterKumari Selja.
They said Maken questioned the rationale of tax benefits to a sporting event that earns crores of rupees in revenue. Agencies
