Congress president Sonia Gandhi has congratulated AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa on her spectacular victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Gandhi spoke to Jayalalithaa over phone on Saturday.
“Gandhi called up all leaders from all the election going states who have emerged victorious. Phone calls were made to leaders across political lines,” a senior Congress leader said.
There was speculation that Gandhi also invited Jaya for tea in New Delhi, but there was no confirmation.
The AIADMK combine led by Jayalalithaa defeated the DMK-led coalition of which Congress is a part.
Few months before the Assembly elections, Jayalalithaa had expresed readiness to join hands with Congress if it dumped the DMK, which has 18 Lok Sabha MPs.
DMK is the third largest constituent of the UPA after the Congress and Trinamool Congress and is part of the ruling alliance at the Centre.
Meanwhile, party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said the Congress president has congratulated everyone who has own and she also telephoned Jayalalithaa.
“In a democracy it is a healthy trend,” she said.
Asked about speculation that Sonia invited Jayalalithaa for tea, she said “I have no idea, I have no info.”
On the question of possible alliance with AIADMK, she said the alliance issue is decided by the high command. Asian Age
