Union home minister P. Chidambaram on Monday said that the “stepping up’’ of the BJP’s attack on him and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the 2G scam is “running parallel’’ to the pace of invesitgations in some terror cases involving right-wing fundamentalists. Attempting to pull the sting out of the BJP’s attack, Mr Chidam-baram said some BJP leaders had told him privately that they don’t believe he, as the finance minister in 2007, had anything to do with the 2G scam. He also said the BJP’s charges against the government raised in Parliament would be replied there.
“There is no allegation… When the debate is raised in Parliament the government will reply to the debate. The allegations made by the BJP, a political party, will be replied by the Congress party’s spokespersons,” he said. On why the Congress spokesperson was only defending the Prime Minister and not him in the 2G case, Mr Chidambaram replied, “Now I think they are targeting the Prime Minister more than me.”
Speaking at a press conference, Mr Chidambaram said, “All I can say is that there must have been some reason to target the PM and me..Although they know and privately a number of BJP leaders have told me that they don’t believe in what some of their colleagues say,” he said.
On the BJP’s charge that the invesitgations into the terror blast cases involving right-wing Hindu extremists is “unrelated’’ to the party’s allegations on his role in the 2G scam, he said, “I’m not sure if they are entirely unrelated. Their (BJP) step-up in attack is running parallel to pace of investigations in some terror cases,” he said. Asian Age
