Dharamsala, Feb 23 (IANS) Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has expressed grief over the deaths in a massive earthquake that hit New Zealand’s second largest city Christchurch and hoped that normal life will be restored soon, an official said here Wednesday.

In a condolence message to New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, the Nobel laureate expressed shock and sadness.

“His Holiness expressed his deeply felt condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the well-being of those who have been injured or lost their homes, with the hope that normal life is restored soon,” a spokesperson for the Dalai Lama’s office said.

The New Zealand government Wednesday declared a state of emergency a day after the earthquake hit Christchurch killing at least 75 people and leaving 300 missing in perhaps the worst disaster in the country’s history.
