France sends rescue teams to Japan

Paris, March 15 (IANS) France has sent rescue teams to Japan, where a magnitude-9 earthquake Friday caused massive destruction, the French foreign ministry has said.Two detachments of civil defence and staff of the Crisis Centre under the foreign ministry, composed of 116 people, have been sent to Japan, foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

A powerful earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale and a resulting tsunami hit Japan Friday causing heavy casualties and extensive damages.

International assistance to Japan is one of the priority issues to be discussed here at the two-day meeting of foreign ministers from the Group of Eight that began Monday.
