Reports early this morning state that a fighter plane has been shot down by rebels in Benghazi. The incident was witnessed by BBC and Reuters reporters on the ground.
Benghazi had been suffering extensive bombing prior to the air attack. It would seem that Gaddafi’s promises of a cease fire were just empty words.
Explosions are reported to have been heard around Benghazi and the situation appears to be deteriorating. Shooting down the fighter plane may be a win in some part for the rebels. However it is bad news for those countries committed to enforcing a no fly zone over Libya.
Opinion: The Libyan conflict now may be on a headlong course to full scale war, involving other countries. Agencies
