Senegal severs diplomatic ties with Iran

Dakar, Feb 23 (IANS) The west African country of Senegal severed its diplomatic relations with Iran Wednesday, accusing it of supplying weapons to anti-government rebels in the Casamance region that killed three Senegalese soldiers this week.

Three Senegalese soldiers were killed this week in Senegal’s Casamance region, south of Gambia, including the Casamance river.

Announcing the government’s decision on state TV around midnight, the foreign ministry said the weapons supplied by Iran to rebel militants brought about the deaths of Senegalese soldiers, Xinhua reported.

The ministry’s statement linked the Iranian weapons with a Sunday attack in Casamance, the latest in a string of such attacks by rebels involved in one of Africa’s longest-running conflicts.
