History & Context
Mecca Masjid stands beside Charminar and is one of Hyderabad’s most important places of worship. Construction began in 1617 under Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah and was completed in 1694 under Aurangzeb.
The mosque’s name is connected to soil brought from Mecca and incorporated into bricks used in the central arch, according to historical accounts.
The mosque impresses through scale and restraint rather than heavy decoration. Its granite prayer hall, broad courtyard and active worship make it a living heritage site.
Visitors should treat it first as a mosque, not just a monument. Modest clothing, quiet behaviour and respect for prayer times matter here.
