Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana and one of India's fastest-growing metropolitan cities. Situated on the Deccan Plateau at an altitude of 542 metres, the city is built around the historic Musi River and a network of ancient lakes including Hussain Sagar — a heart-shaped reservoir constructed in 1562. With a population exceeding 10 million, it ranks as India's fourth-largest city.
Founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, Hyderabad was the seat of the powerful Nizams for over two centuries, earning a rich legacy of Mughal-Deccani architecture, cuisine, and culture. The iconic Charminar — a 56-metre monument with four grand minarets — stands at the heart of the old city and remains the enduring symbol of Hyderabad worldwide. The nearby Golconda Fort, once the world's diamond trading centre, tells the story of the city's famed pearl and gem trade.
Today Hyderabad wears two faces: the ancient bazaars of Laad Bazaar selling glass bangles and pearls sit just kilometres from HITEC City, a gleaming technology corridor that houses the Indian offices of Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Apple. The city's biryani, slow-cooked in the Hyderabadi dum style, is considered among the finest in the world and is a pilgrimage in itself for food lovers.
